Fitzroy Island, a few months ago I didn’t even know this tropical island. Now that I’ve been there I want to share it with everyone. If you like white beaches, snorkeling, diving, hiking and relaxing, then Fitzroy Island is the right place for you. During our Queensland trip we wanted to combine the mainland of Australia with tropical islands. The journey started in Cairns, where after one night sleep in the Oaks Cairns Hotel (which is a great hotel by the way) we immediately took the ferry to the paradise of Fitzroy Island. This special island is a 45-minute boat ride from Cairns harbour.

Fitzroy Island Resort

We had consciously chosen to book 1 night on Fitzroy Island, since we still had a long journey ahead of us along other beautiful places. We stayed at Fitzroy Island Resort, the only resort on the island. Fortunately, this was a good resort with nice rooms and good facilities. By the way, the ferry stops in front of the resort, after the boat trip you are already at your destination. Read more about Fitzroy Island Resort.

The resort has a restaurant where you can have breakfast and dinner. At the pool you will find a cocktail bar where you can order cocktails and other tasty drinks during the day.

There is also Foxy’s Bar which is a few meters walk from the resort. Here you can order Australian dishes such as burgers and parmesan crusted chicken schnitzels. The dishes are slightly simpler than in the resort’s restaurant, but just as tasty. And what cheaper! Foxy’s Bar is also perfect for a romantic evening. Order a drink during or after sunset and enjoy the sound of the sea in the background.

We didn’t really have a plan when we arrived on the island. We had read in advance and read that snorkeling and hiking were recommended. Two activities that we both really enjoy.

Hiking

Since Fitzroy Island has a tropical climate and it is in the middle of the rainy season, it can be quite warm. We had therefore decided to go hiking immediately upon arrival (around 11 o’clock), so that we did not start this during the hottest part of the day. We didn’t have the key to our room yet, we didn’t get it until early in the afternoon, so the hike was a nice bridge until we could get into our room.

Hiking on Fitzroy Island is not easy, we soon found out. On the first climb we immediately felt how steep the trails are. Our calves and knees had a big challenge during this walk.

While hiking, it is always smart to take enough water with you, to apply some sunscreen and to wear a cap. It can be very humid, especially in the rainy season. Drinking well is therefore very important!

After a few kilometers of climbing we arrived at the old lighthouse. This lighthouse certainly does not deserve the beauty prize, but the view was phenomenal.

The descent always seems easier, but on such steep paths you always have to be careful. It was especially noticeable in our knees.

During this walk you will encounter many lizards and salamanders, but you can also spot birds such as cockatoos.

Enchanting Coastline

What I will never forget about Fitzroy Island is the enchanting coastline. From the moment we arrived by ferry I was in love with the bright blue water in which thousands of fish could be seen in schools.

But the many large rocks in the water that make this island so special are also fantastic to see. Especially when the weather is clear and you see the different shades of blue of the water.

The island has several beaches. There are sandy beaches, but there are also pieces with old coral. The shifting of this ancient chorale sounds like clinking glass, a strange but beautiful sensation.

The most beautiful part of the island is a few minutes’ walk from the resort. This is the perfect spot for snorkeling and a very photogenic spot. Enjoy the splashing water against the rocks and the mountains in the background.

With the naked eye you can already see colorful fish swimming here in clear weather. But the best thing is of course to go into the water yourself with a snorkel and stinger suit (wetsuit against stinger bites). Time to go exploring! The Great Barrier Reef is full of surprises!

Snorkeling

Good preparation is half the job. If you go snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef in the rainy season, you should take stingers into account. The most common stingers in the Great Barrier Reef are the Box Jellyfish and the Irukandji Jellyfish. A poisonous sting from a stinger can make you seriously ill and even die.

To prevent this, it is possible to rent a stinger suit. Although there are a lot of stubborn people who don’t do this and still want to take the risk, I really recommend it! Renting is not expensive and a stinger suit also protects against the sun. We have also observed stingers while snorkeling, so they are really there.

Snorkeling at Fitzroy Island is really beautiful. While there isn’t a lot of vibrant coral to spot, the colored fish are well worth a look. In addition to these fish, we also spotted a stingray. It is still great to see how special the underwater world actually is.

While snorkeling, there is also a chance to spot turtles. We didn’t spot a turtle while snorkeling, but we did see a large turtle swimming from a distance while we were having lunch.

You can also visit the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Center which is located next to the resort. It has limited opening hours, so we didn’t visit it this time, but it would be well worth it according to the resort staff.

We snorkeled in 2 different places. Once at the pier near the resort and once at that beautiful spot with many rocks, a 5-minute walk from the resort.

In addition to these places, you also have Nudey Beach, which is a white coral beach, which is surrounded by rainforest. We did not visit this beach, but it can be reached with a short hike past Foxy’s bar. This must also be a beautiful beach, where you can also snorkel well. The name suggests that it is a nudist beach, but that is not allowed here. It’s just the name of the beach.

What a paradise - Fitzroy Island
What a paradise

The visit to Fitzroy Island suited us very well. Even if it was only for 1 night, we had a great time. The island is a true paradise and snorkelling enthusiasts can indulge themselves here. If we are ever in the area of Cairns again, the temptation is great to return. You can hardly convey the beauty of this tropical island through photos and videos, you really have to experience it for yourself! We’re done, while you still are. 🙂
