While we can’t get enough of Australia’s coastline, we also love being out in nature. On our Tropical North Queensland trip, we made frequent detours to see the sights. We visited Wallaman Falls in Girringun National Park, the highest single drop waterfall in Australia. An impressive waterfall surrounded by beautiful nature. Are the Wallaman Falls on your list? From Cardwell to Wallaman Falls

The day before we drove to Wallaman Falls, we stayed in Cardwell, a quiet place along the coast. We slept at Cardwell Beachfront Motel, a cosy motel on the waterfront. We had bicycles to borrow to explore the coast of Cardwell. We didn’t want to miss this bike tour along the wonderful coast.

The owner of the motel gave us a great travel tip, to visit Wallaman Falls, which is a 1.5-hour drive from Cardwell. We were very enthusiastic about it and visited this falls next day.

The route

On the way from Cardwell to Wallaman Falls, we drove a lot on winding roads and we had many nice stops.

In the town of Inghams, we stopped for a nice breakfast and coffee. We were helped here by a very sweet old Greek lady. A very tough old lady. She stood alone behind the counter and helped all the guests who came for coffee or breakfast, and it was quite busy. A lot of respect for her, and the breakfast was delicious!

After this stop, we drove on to Wallaman Falls. It is a pleasure every time when we see all the amazing Australian landscapes.

It was not very busy on the way. Maybe it was because we went in the morning. And of course, international tourists still cannot travel to Australia because of covid-19.

Wildlife

We did meet locals such as farmers working on the land and cows and wallabies sitting curiously on the side of the road.

The road to the Wallaman Falls was quite narrow, with oncoming traffic you had to go into the roadside. Fortunately, the road was quiet and we didn’t see many cars. It was a very beautiful route, with first a bit of climbing with many bends and later a straight road which eventually turned into an unpaved path.

Wallaman Falls

We have seen several waterfalls during the trips we have made in recent years. From the Niagara Falls in Canada to the Sekumpul Waterfall in Bali. Each waterfall has its own beauty. The Wallaman Falls was special to me because it is the highest singledrop waterfall in Australia and because of its particularly beautiful landscape.

When I followed the water from top to bottom, I saw a kind of delay in the water. The sun shone beautifully on it, highlighting the nature, rocks and water.

Not only the waterfall is beautiful to see, the huge rock wall next to it is also impressive to see. Especially the different colors that are created by erosion that you see in them.

Does this waterfall belong on your bucket list when you go to Australia? That’s a question that has a different answer for everyone. Australia has so many waterfalls that it can be difficult to choose which one is more beautiful or more impressive, but we do recommend Wallaman Falls, because the route to it is an excursion in itself and it is quite impressive to have seen the highest singledrop waterfall in Australia.
