What are the most beautiful places in Darwin, a question that is very difficult to answer? Darwin has a huge coastline and many special places. Nevertheless, after 9 months of living in Darwin, we already have a few favourites. Here are our 5 favourite places along the coast of Darwin.
Regularly we get on a bike or take the car to go in the direction of Casuarina Beach. A good place to take a breath of fresh air and walk with the dog.
Casuarina Coastal Reserve is more than just beach. You can also enjoy cycling, sports and even have a drink. You will find De La Plage, a cozy beach cafe and a very nice place on the beach to have coffee or even lunch. It was very quiet when we were there because it was on a weekday. At the weekend and at the end of the day it can be more crowded.
East Point Reserve
Don’t miss East Point Reserve when you are in Darwin in the NT. This place is very nice to visit for 2 reasons. The first reason is: the coastline is amazing. Idyllic bays filled with rugged rocks and surrounded by an oasis of green. This place will surprise you.
The second reason to visit East Point is because of the beautiful wildlife what you can spot. We’ve been here 3 times now, and all times we saw a lot of Wallabies and other tropical animals like birds and lizards.
Tip: when you visiting Darwin and East Point in special in October or November you can enjoy these wonderful red blossom trees.
Not far away from East Point Reserve, you find the beautiful place Fannie Bay. An area where you must definitely take a walk and enjoy the (similar to East Point) beautiful coastline.
In the dry season, you can enjoy the many sailboats. Together with the azure blue water and the fishermen on the coast. It looks like a postcard, so don’t forget to bring your camera 😉
Along the coast, on the lawn, you will also find various picnic tables where you can relax. Fannie Bay is a great place with a very nice atmosphere and can be combined with a visit to East Point Reserve.
Nightcliff is perhaps Darwin’s most popular spot, apart from the city itself. Many residents of Darwin and tourists can be found here in the dry season to enjoy nature. On the long cycle path that runs along much of the coast, you can see cyclists, walkers and runners.
Many Australians going to Nightcliff to enjoy the day with their esky (cool box) filled with tasty snacks. Families sitting on camping chairs and having a BBQ at the public BBQ places.
Nightcliff is another photogenic place. Don’t miss the trees, where you can spot various tropical birds. But you can also spot a lot of wildlife on the ground, such as lizards and salamanders, which can be found in all shapes and sizes.
Another great place to visit in Darwin is Dripstone Cliffs, a bit further south then Casuarina Beach. We found a place in the shade (it’s always sunny and warm in Darwin) and enjoyed the sounds of the sea and birds around us. We had an amazing view of the beach. Especially in the morning and early in the evening you can see many Australians walking on the beach with their dogs.
