Getting there
Indonesia sits remote but gains more tourists every year, regular flight routes now open from Asia and Europe.
From Europe or Asia to Bali
- Most international flights land at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) near Denpasar.
- From Europe, you usually fly with one stop via hubs like Istanbul, Singapore, Doha, Dubai, or Kuala Lumpur.
- From major Asian hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, or Hong Kong, there are frequent direct flights to Bali.
From Bali to Lombok or Flores
- To reach Lombok from Bali, you can fly in about 30–40 minutes from Denpasar or take a Bali Lombok fast boat or Bali Lombok ferry in 1.5–4 hours depending on route and sea conditions.
- To reach Flores from Bali, the quickest way is a Bali to Flores flight from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport), which takes around 1–1.5 hours with several daily departures.
From the airport to Lombok
- Lombok International Airport (LOP) sits in central–south Lombok and connects to Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.
- From the airport, you can reach Kuta Lombok in about 30–40 minutes by taxi or transfer, and Senggigi in roughly 1.5 hours depending on traffic.
From the airport to Flores
- Jetstar Asia launched the first direct flights from Singapore (SIN) to Labuan Bajo starting March 20, 2025, operating Thursdays and Sundays (about 3.5 hours). From other big cities like Bangkok or Kuala LUmpur, you first need to make a stop at Bali.
- From Labuan Bajo you can join boat trips to Komodo National Park or connect to other parts of Flores by local flights, buses, or overland tours.
Culture in Bali vs. Lombok vs. Flores
Bali runs on Hindu traditions with daily offerings, temple ceremonies, and dances like Kecak that blend spirituality into everyday life.
Lombok’s Sasak people follow a unique Islam called Wetu Telu – mixing Muslim prayers with Hindu-animist roots – seen in shared Hindu-Muslim temples like Pura Lingsar.
Flores stands Catholic from Portuguese times, but weaves in indigenous rituals like pig sacrifices and ancestor dances during church events.
Each island keeps customs alive through festivals and villages. Bali’s Nyepi silent day shuts everything down for reflection. Lombok hosts Perang Topat rice fights at Lingsar for harmony. Flores mixes Mass with local divinations and megalith pulpits in churches.
Bali’s the most open-minded island. You can kiss your partner on the beach without issues. In Lombok or Flores, respect local culture by keeping public affection low-key.
That said, Flores and Lombok locals stay friendly, chill, and welcoming. I’ve never felt bad vibes, quite the opposite. Locals get curious about why you’re visiting, want to chat and learn about you. Most have genuine intentions, some might pitch tours or souvenirs, but that’s part of travel when you’re a tourist.

Which one to choose
Those three islands are quite close to each other, but as you’ve seen the culture is already different, as well as the activities and the crowds.
Bali’s great if it’s your first time in Indonesia. One day or another you need to pass there to see what it’s like and why all this fame around this island. But I must warn you – at some places it starts to lose its charm because of overtourism, waste, more buildings than rice fields, and more.
But go to Bali to visit those rice fields, to feel the Hinduism vibe, to party in Kuta or around. You can do yoga or surf there too – quite famous for that as well. There are many places you can stay at, if you’re don’t which one, I’ve made the perfect guide to choose where to stay in Bali.

Lombok is much more about nature. You won’t have more rice fields there, but more hikes, beautiful beaches with much less people. It doesn’t mean it’s an empty island (Flores is more like that to be honest) – there are few cities like Mataram where you’ll find great nightlife.
Flores is all about multi-day adventures with the Komodo Tour, sea activities like scuba diving or snorkeling with manta rays. The city Labuan Bajo is nice, but it doesn’t feel like a city on an island. It’s a normal city with a pier for those sea adventures. Though you have lots of resorts all along the coastline, but they’re resorts, not chill hotels with bars and music. This vibe differs a lot from Bali and Lombok.

Which one is better for specific activities
Those islands propose really nice activities, here’s a lit of all the best activities in Bali, Lombok and Flores.

Surfing in Bali vs. Lombok vs. Flores
I had to make a small section to give more details about surf in this region.
Bali rules world-class breaks. There are many surf schools at Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, but it gets very crowded. Uluwatu barrels are famous too – crowded as well but worth trying.
Lombok keeps it chill. Most beaches on the west side (near Mataram) have surf schools with nice waves. Selong Belanak (south of the island) works well for beginners and Desert Point barrels for pros – less hectic than Bali, but further and harder to reach.
Flores barely surfs. As I told you earlier the coastline’s packed with resorts and the sea stays quite calm – there aren’t big currents there.
If you come to the region to surf, focus on Bali or Lombok.
Which One is Cheaper?
Of course on each island you have every type of hotel, hostel, and resort, restaurants and activities for all price ranges. But in a general way, Lombok’s the cheapest, Flores sits in between, and Bali’s the most expensive. But it varies a lot depending on many factors.
In Lombok you have fewer fancy restaurants than Bali. So in Bali you can easily be tempted to go to a nice bar, then a stylish restaurant, then hit a nightclub and your night expenses will be quite high. But you can also keep it chill and just grab a beer at the beach.

Have You Chosen Your Island?
I hope this guide gave you some valuable information about those three islands and that now you have a better idea of which island’s best for you.
Remember that many people do two or even all three islands during a trip to Indonesia. If you’re tempted to do that, I’ve published an article about a 1-month itinerary in Indonesia to see most of what this country can offer you.
So now it’s time to book your flights, hotels, and pack your luggage. See you under the sun of Indonesia !
